Portable e-Book Reader Review

Portable e-Book Reader Review

Electronic books are better known as e-Books. This is the latest rage amongst book lovers. Ebooks have numerous benefits over and above the usual hard bound ones. The best part is that the E books are extremely affordable and user friendly. Now, in order to read e-books you either have to use your computer or purchase a resource like a portable e-Book reader. The readers are available in various price ranges. The price will depend on the features that you may want in your reader. These features could vary from how big you want your screen or how much memory you may want and much more. Prices start from a few dollars and go up to as much as a few thousand dollars.

The experience of reading on a ereader is almost like a real experience with a hard cover book. The screen is wide and looks like a paper sheet. Moreover, many renowned manufacturers like Sony have launched the E Ink technology. Thanks to this E ink technology, each and every letter and word looks like it is printed on screen and not typed. The latest versions come with various options like Size button, which enables you to choose the desired Font Style and size. This is a boon in disguise for all those who are actually suffering from eye sight disorder. You can choose the font as Small, Medium or large. Not only that, you can also read books in either landscape or portrait mode. I guess that will all depend on your fancy.

Many have a notion, that reading Ebooks on these portable readers strain the eye, but that is not the case in reality. They are soft on the eyes. The best part about these Ebooks is that they are portable. These portable E books can be carried with you where ever you go. No matter where you might be heading, you can simply carry this portable E book along with you. Depending on the size of the storage chips, the number of E books stored can be determined.

The only issue is that unlike a page being flipped, the screen actually blinks for a fraction of a second every time it is turned or flipped. That sometimes bothers the eyes.

Portable E-Book Reader Review – The Amazon Kindle

Portable E-Book Reader Review – The Amazon Kindle

This portable e-book reader review is going to focus on the Amazon Kindle because everywhere I go, I see people using them; at airports, in trains, waiting at the doctor’s surgery. I just had to find out why this e-book reader was so good and this is what I found.

1. Weight. At 247 grams, the Kindle weighs less than the average paperback.
2. Size. The dimensions of the Kindle are 190 mm x 123 mm x 8.5 mm which is also less that the average paperback and easily fits a jacket pocket or a normal sized handbag.
3. Reading in sunlight. With some tablet PCs, glare is a big issue if you want to read on the beach or in the garden but the Kindle’s electronic ink screen, not only uses ink but actually looks just like ink on a page made of real paper.
4. Book storage. This e-book reader has room to store around 3,500 books and even if you should exceed this number, you can store the excess in your Amazon account.

]]>

5. Internet access. If you choose the 3G version of the Kindle, you can download a fresh supply of books in more than one hundred countries and you don’t even need to be in range of a wi-fi network. It works like GPS and you don’t have to pay any fee for this service.
6. Battery Life. If you keep your 3G turned off when you’re not using it, then the batter can last up to two months before you need to recharge it either through a mains electricity outlet or by USB connection to a computer (leads and interchangeable plugs are provided).
7. Book organisation. Your can organise your books into collections, so you could file them by type or by author or whatever you choose.
8. Magazines and newspapers. If you take out a subscription, you can download daily, weekly or monthly magazines and papers.
9. Personal paperwork. You can send personal or business paperwork to your Kindle for easy reading on the train.
10. Reading in dim light. If you purchase the bespoke Kindle case, it has a built in reading light which works from the Kindles own battery. Really handy when you’re on an aeroplane at night and you don’t want to disturb your fellow passengers by turning on your overhead light.
11. Personalisation. You can rotate the screen from portrait to landscape and you can increase or decrease the size of the font.

This is just a brief portable e-book reader review with a sample of the advantages of using a Kindle; there are many more, plus some in experimentation.

The Olive Readers By Christine Aziz – Book Review

The Olive Readers By Christine Aziz – Book Review

An ominous premonition. In The Olive Readers, Christine Aziz hits the fast forward button and places the reader in a dystopian future world where corporations rule the Earth. This story of a world gone wrong is told through the eyes and plight of a young woman named Jephzat. Jephzat lives in the federation state responsible for producing olives in the new world order. The corporations control all information. The possession of books is forbidden. Aziz’s heroine is a strong-willed character that appeals to readers. She is intelligent and mature for her age, displaying unflinching loyalty to her family and friends and an endearing independent spirit in spite of the corporate suppression. Throughout the story the audience is introduced to an eclectic cast of characters – some evoking admiration, others representing the darker side of humanity.

This story is grand in ambition and for the most part, in execution. Aziz really gets into the minds of readers through direct tie-backs and references to the current state of our world. She refers to current international disputes over natural resources and the problem of climate change and presents the future dystopian world as the result of our mismanagement of those issues. The writing conveys a distinct sense of foreboding and serves as a warning of what might be. Another more uplifting message conveyed by Aziz is the value and power of information and that in todays society we often take access to information and freedom of speech for granted. We are also reminded of both the fragility and strength of the human spirit and that love can be found in the most dire situations. Aziz reminds us that change starts with a single person.

Christine Aziz’s manuscript for The Olive Readers was selected from more than 46,000 entries to win ‘Richard and Judy’s’ How to Get Published competition and was published in 2006. Aziz apparently wrote the first half of this story over 18 years and the latter half in just two months. This in itself represents its only failing for me – the climatic ending seemed a little rushed, causing the grandeur created in the first half of the novel to be somewhat lost when it counted most.

eBook Reader Review

eBook Reader Review

Several years ago, we could recognize that someone is reading if he had a hardbound book in his hands, but time has changed to a much more convenient reading experience due to the existence of this Portable Reader. It basically functions like those old print books but this one is the electronic version with more additional features. Therefore, it does not disclude some things; rather it adds more.

As mentioned, the device does not get rid of those things that you once had which may include the capability to put bookmarks on the pages, make some notes, highlight some passages, and save important texts. To add more of your vocabulary, you can always find the meaning of every new word that you encounter by using this device’s built-in dictionary. It is also good to know that the font size and style can be changed based on what your eyes can bear. Its back-lit screen is also good for the eyes because it allows you to easily read even in dim-lit places.

]]>

The way towards convenience was led by Amazon. Its initiative to design its first Kindle Portable Reader had stopped everyone from going to the stores for that desired book and made anyone read a book without a book anymore. Of course, don’t settle for what you already have. Following the first Kindle is Amazon’s second edition of this device. It is called Kindle 2 which was rooted from the original Kindle but is much better when it comes to providing such great experience in reading.

What makes this gadget lovable? Everyone loves the quality of its screen display that is caused by its use of an electronic ink display technology. It is also great when it comes to its weight at only 10.2 ounces and it’s thin so that even you’re on a trip, you can just put it inside your purse, in your bag, or even carry it with your hands alone. You don’t have to be too good for you to get this device working because it doesn’t need any set-up at all. You can already use it out from the box without doing anything anymore and you can then start accessing this library with its tons of books.

Everyone is truly lucky enough to have this Book Reader Electronic by Amazon. Nothing compares to the convenience that it brings especially because it has wireless connectivity. That means that a person no longer has to worry on finding an available wireless network to connect to because such device will enable him to connect to the Internet already. Amazon is too kind to do this for you, but you don’t have to pay any monthly fee anymore. Your time, effort, and money are also well-taken care of because all you have to do is quickly download the things that you need for just a small amount of change.

No one else benefits from your choice of buying this wireless reading device other than the environment and every living thing in this world. That is because when you prefer to use this device, you have also stopped the cutting down of trees which are then used to make those papers which are in return, used to produce those traditional books. If those trees were left to grow, destructions are also minimized.

Nook Color Review: The Ebook Reader That Looks Like A Tablet

Nook Color Review: The Ebook Reader That Looks Like A Tablet

Considering that book giant Barnes & Noble only introduced the Nook in the fall of 2009, it came as a pleasant surprise that only a year later a Nook Color edition is already out. Touted as the “reader’s tablet”, we’ll find out in this Nook Color review just what the Barnes & Noble Nook Color offers, whether as a tablet as an ebook reader.

. Compared to the e-ink version of the Nook ereader, the Nook color is a tad bigger and heavier. Weighing a solid 15.8 ounces, it is 8.1 inches long, with a width of 5 inches and a depth of 0.5 inch. The frontportion of the device consists of hard plastic while the back has a smooth, rubber backing.

. Throw out your expectations of the Nook Color being just another ebook reader, only with a colored screen; this ereader may easily be mistaken for a tablet PC. Unlike the usual ereaders which use e-ink technology, this one comes with a 7-inch full color LED-backlit IPS display. This type of display is in fact, the same kind of display technology that Apple uses on the iPad and Mac. The Nook Color though, is enhanced with Barnes & Nobles custom VividView Technology, a kind of screen laminating technique that serves to reduce the glare.

]]>

. The Nook Color’s program is based on the Android 2.1, the widely-used operating system running on a big number of smartphones and tablets in the market today. In this Barnes & Noble device, the Android-based software delivers the goods.

Nook Color users are all praises for the ereader’s fast performance, quick page turns, intuitive and responsive touchscreen, and crisp, clear images and text. Even browsing through PDFs and picture galleries are said to be a total breeze.

In coming out with a colored ebook reading device, Barnes & Noble has also made sure that the attention that it’s gotten so far is not all hype. The Nook Color now has added functionality including web browsing, Pandora music app, email, and video playbacks, and it’s also designed to work with B & N’s new features and technologies.

The Nook Kids brand has over a hundred fully-illustrated children’s ebooks that will come alive when read on the Nook Color, and the NookFriends technology is a way of sharing meaningful passages to other Nook users through Facebook and Twitter. Then of course, Barnes & Noble also retains its book sharing feature, the exclusive LendMe technology.

The company has really gone out of its way to release an ebook reader that’s not only sleek and feature-packed, but is reasonably-priced as well. For 9, you already get a gadget that let’s you do not only ebook reading but a lot of other functions as well.

But of course, it’s far from being a perfect device. Its battery life for instance, is too short for an ereader. The 8 hours it offer pales in comparison with battery performance of other ereaders which use e-ink. Also, even with its VividView treatment, the LCD display could still get reflective and possibly even cause eye strain after a few hours.

The bottom line of this Nook Color review is that it’s all a matter of preference. The Nook Color is certainly ideal if you like its tablet-like features, and if your family’s reading fare mostly consists of magazines, children’s books, cookbooks and other content that requires color. However, for long form reading of mostly text ebooks, e-ink ebook readers are still the better choice.

Kobo ebook reader review

Kobo ebook reader review

Along with the opening today of its online ebook store, Whitcoulls has launched the Kobo dedicated eReader, giving Kiwis their first retail experience of an e-Ink ebook reader.

The Kobo eReader will be stocked in about 30 of Whitcoulls’ stores as well as being for sale online at whitcoulls.co.nz. It sells for NZ5 including GST which is a little higher than we’d hoped it would be. In the US, it sells for US9, in Canada C9, and it’s a9 across the Tasman in Australia. But even at 5, it represents very good value compared to other offerings and it’s a price that should encourage a lot of Kiwis to jump on board. The Kindle for instance — still unavailable to New Zealand buyers — retails for US9 which is about NZ0 with GST added.

The Kobo/Whitcoulls service is more than an eReader and you don’t actually need this eReader to read the Kobo ebooks. One of Whitcoulls/Kobo’s distinguishing features is its support of the industry standard ePub format along with a wide range of reading devices from PCs and Macs (not recommended for in-depth reading) to iPhones, iPads, Blackberries and Android smartphones.

Whitcoulls launched its iPhone/iPod Touch app (link opens iTunes) today and will shortly roll out support for Blackberries, Android smartphones and, in time for its July New Zealand launch, the iPad.

]]>

Despite all this choice, if you can justify the cost, a dedicated ebook reader will add plenty to your ebook reading enjoyment.

Whitcoulls and Kobo have been smart in opting for a basic specification with a good price point rather than loading the Kobo eReader with lots of expensive features that don’t always add a lot to the reading experience.

Don’t let its budget price fool you. The Kobo is one of the best ebook readers around, functionally, ergonomically and style-wise. It has a quality feel, weighs in at 221 grams making it ideal for one-handed reading. Try doing that for long periods on an Apple iPad.

Its 6-inch/15 cm e-Ink screen operates crisply with nice typography including a choice of a serif and a sans serif typeface plus five type sizes. The black and white e-Ink display gives it a stable paper-like appearance, much easier on the eyes than the more common backlit LCD/LED displays, and offers great readability in natural light conditions, including outside in sunshine. Add a long battery life measured in weeks rather than hours and you’ve got a compelling feature set for comfortable reading.

One of the best usability features of the Kobo eReader is its “D-Pad” (short for “Directional Pad”). It’s a large round button which you press on the right or left edge to turn the pages forward or back. A neat feature is that pressing the D-Pad at the top or bottom will increase or decrease font size. A minor criticism is that the Kobo works best when held with the right hand but is a little less comfortable when held in the left. Many ebook readers solve this with an extra set of page forward/page back buttons on the left.

Review of Entourage Edge eBook Reader

Review of Entourage Edge eBook Reader

The Entourage Edge has more or less the same looks and shape as a netbook, but it is not a netbook. While net books have a single screen and a keyboard these machine sports two screens – a 9.7 inch eInk display and a 10.1 inch LCD color display. Specification Internal Memory: 4GB, Display Size/Resolution: LCD 10.1-inch/1024 x 600 pixels; EPD 9.7-inch/1200 x 825 pixels Ports: 2 USB, 1 mini USB, headphone, mic jacks Connectivity: WiFi 802.11 b/g Card Slots: SD card, SIM card Size: 10.8 x 8.3 x 1.0 inches Price as Configured: 9.00 Laptop Magazine has published the first detailed review of the Entourage Edge.

While the reviewer found the machine a bit bulky she is quite impressed with its ability to serve multiple purposes. In fact, with its versatility, the Edge does manage to make Amazon’s Kindle look boring. The Edge is essentially an eBook reader but at 3 pounds, it is many times heavier than a dedicated eBook reader. You can use this device to download and read eBooks on the eInk display. You may also take notes on either of the touch sensitive displays with the included stylus.

The Edge has a built-in journal and voice recorder so you can record lectures. And when you feel the need to, you may check your favorite websites such as Facebook or Twitter. And unlike dedicated eBook readers, the Edge can play music and video. Since Edge is an Android-powered device it can run numerous third party applications such as the Dolphin Web browser, an RSS reader and Facebook and Twitter applications.

On the flip side, the software that ships with the device isn’t up to the market. In fact, the apps store is not yet fully functional and stocks fewer best sellers than the Kindle apps store. But these are issues that may get solved by the time the machine hits the street.

Barnes & Noble Nook E-Book Reader: A Detailed Review

Barnes & Noble Nook E-Book Reader: A Detailed Review

Barnes & Noble when first released their e-book reader about a year ago it was definitely going for the success road. B&N has indeed gone from almost a no name and no presence in the electronic books industry to the present 20 percent of the market share. Recently, company made a definitive move by switching from their already existing sluggish hybrid device that had a combination of E-ink and LCD to a more visually rich Color Tablet that looks similar to e-book reader.
According to the various industry analysts, the Nook color is indeed a great step by B&N as they have powered the latest Colored e-book reader with Android mobile operating system and has tapped the children’s book and full fledge periodicals and magazines category. Both of these categories are still somewhat overlooked by the likes of Amazon and tech giant Apple. Apart from a full fledge e-book reader, Nook Color offers a wholesome Tablet computing experience, pretty much what you experience on Apple’s hottest selling item of the year iPad and Samsung’s Tablet device, Galaxy Tab.
Moreover, B&N is also planning to launch its very own Android Tablet store for the applications just like Apple’s App Store. The e-book market is suffering from a fierce competition and B&N has to bear the brunt of the competition. Is Nook Color the right choice for an e-book reader and will it make its mark as a Tablet computer alternative? Let’s review it on both the hardware and the software front.Nook Color Hardware
From the design point of view, it seems obvious that B&N has put in a lot of effort in carving out the design factor. In fact according to a source close to the company, the real design rather the main manufacturing blueprint of the device is done by Yves Behar, who is the main designer behind the products like OLPC laptop XO and gadgets like Jambox. So, there is undoubtedly no mistake in the master touch of this device, on the design parameter. The front side of the device is all about a 7-inch IPS display screen of size 1024×600. The sides and edges of the device are almost coated with matte finish and a special charcoaled colored Plastic. On the back side, the device is pretty smooth to touch and have a soft rubber in it. There is a 3.5mm Headphone jack that is right on top of the Device, plus there is a speaker as well on the back side of the device. There is also a Home Button, just like Apple iPhone home button, that straight away takes you to the always familiar Homescreen. Having thickness of 0.48 inch, the device feels pretty substantial in your hand.

]]>

Now from inside, the device is equipped with a TI O MAP 3621 CPU that is clocked to almost a speed of 800 MHz and the device boasts a 512 MB of RAM and a total of 8GB of flash storage. Moreover, there is a Micro SD slot that can enable you to expand the memory to a total of almost 32GB. The Company B&N is quite proud of the screen, they have boasted in the new device. It has a “VividView” treatment that gives users a smaller amount of glare. So, this means that screen coating on the device is somewhat fully laminated against the own glare, but still some users have complained that the reading in brightly lit places is difficult.
The device Nook Color is equipped with Wi-Fi and users that always opt for 3G will have to wait a bit, because there is no 3G option in the device. Moreover, there is a light sensor in the front of the device that helps the brightness control of the device. Well overall, Nook Color has an air of good design with it that gives it a total control over the performance factor. On the performance front, the device is pretty good and utilizes its hardware to the optimum level.Software Features of Nook Color
Well, it is a general perception among the tech analysts that touch screen devices realm is all about the software that powers the device; Nook Color is having a downside on the software front as it is not powered by standard Android versions available in the Smartphones rather it is built on a custom Android build that is a revamped software version of Android 2.1. Android 2.2 is the running firmware on almost all the devices and Google is planning to step into the realm of Android 2.3, so this makes B&N a bit outdated on the software front. But the custom Android of Color Nook is typically redesigned that very much makes it different than what you find on normal Android versions.
So when you first power ON the device, you are greeted with a center screen sort with three distinct Homescreens where it is very much easy for you to arrange your periodicals and books that you are currently reading or planning to read. Moreover, a quick boot also allows you to have a quick access to other notable features like general settings and the most recent collection that you have streamlined.
Gauging the general navigation on every screen that you will come across, there is a small tab that pretty much draws a list of options from the base of the page with very familiar Nook Color selectable menus like Shop, Web, Search, Library and settings.
The library section of Color Nook is normally organized by both the Books and the newspapers and it also gives option to users to customize their library. Shopping via Nook is also been made interactive with clear sought out methods for the discovery of contents and the search for the contents. The device plays Audio files like AAC files and MP3 files but getting your music into the player is quite a cumbersome task, plus there is no option of adding files or albums into the Playlists. Playing videos is yet another issue because, apart from playing formats like M4Vs, it pops up some problems while playing HD format videos.Overall ratings
Well, if you are a hard core e-book enthusiast with a wholesome appetite of going through magazines and stuff on your gadgets, then Nook Color is definitely the gadget you should spend your hard earned cash on. Moreover, Barnes & Noble has considerably a good collection of books and Journals with them and company is also frantically trying to pursue the periodical business which will definitely help them in making their mark in the industry.
